Fun Facts about Hard Cider

1.Cider has history-
The earliest record of fermentation of apples can be traced back to the Romans in 55 BC  when they reached England and noticed villagers drinking an alcoholic drink made from Ciders

From the 13th to the 17th centuries in Europe drinking cider was safer than water and even babies were baptized in it because it was considered to be more sanitary than the water.

It was a drink of choice in early America- John Adams, our 2nd president was known to have a tankard of cider with his breakfast every morning as he believed it promoted good health. He did live until he was 90…

2. How it is made
It starts in the apple orchard. The apples are harvested by hand and then pressed into juice. It takes about 36 pieces of fruit to make one gallon! Yeast is then added to the fresh pressed juice and fermentation begins. When all the sugar is converted to cider- it is consider dry. The apple varieties that are used depend on what taste and flavor the cider maker is trying to achieve. Blending is crucial because it allows the cider to balance the sweetness, tartness and dryness.

3. Gluten Free? Whether you are celiac or on a gluten free diet- Cider is naturally gluten free so a great alternative.
